Description
Atomos Ninja V+ 5.2″ HDMI external recorder – compact and versatile
If you’re filming with an 8K camera, then it might be worth shooting 8K Raw video, and the Atomos Ninja V+ 5.2″ 4K HDMI external recorder is just the right piece of kit for that. This is a five-inch external recorder/monitor that records and plays back 8K Raw video, provided the device is fitted with a suitable mini-SSD drive (standard SSDs also work with the included adapter, provided they’re fast enough). The Ninja V+ can record Apple ProRes Raw directly from the sensor and is compatible with the Canon R5, amongst other cameras. You can also record in H.265 mode when you want high quality in a small file size (even ProRes 4:2:2 10-bit). The display is a 5.2″ 10-bit panel with a brightness of up to 1000 cd/m². AtomHDR technology accurately monitors log gamma footage without you having to view a flat preview or use a LUT profile. The monitor natively supports the most popular log formats from Sony, Canon, Panasonic, ARRI, Red and JVC straight out of the box. The settings only affect the display; the recorded footage itself remains intact.
The Atomos Ninja V+ 5.2″ HDMI external recorder is designed to withstand the rigours of production, which is why it is built with a durable aluminium body. It is powered by a single L-series battery. Other handy features include on-screen exposure analysis, various cropping options, focus assist tools and an anamorphic de-squeeze function. An AC adaptor and SSD tray are included.
User interface. The Ninja V+’s HDR functions can be accessed via the MON button, whilst ProRes settings are selected from the top-left corner of the device. The Ninja V+ is capable of recording to either an AtomX SSDmini or a standard 2.5″ SSD. On a 1 TB drive, you can record up to 150 minutes of 4K video. With the separately available AtomX Ethernet/NDI and SYNC Expansion modules, you can stream video to an IP address or add wireless timecode for multi-camera shoots.
AtomHDR Thanks to this, you can monitor up to 10 stops of dynamic range from your camera’s LOG footage. Most modern monitors only display six or seven stops, which is perfectly fine for standard footage, but LOG footage looks really washed-out on them. It’s also far superior to using a loaded LUT, as that often causes the highlights to break up and the shadows to become blocked.
In the light of day A high-performance display. The Ninja V’s 5.2″ IPS LCD display delivers a staggering 1,000 cd/m² of brightness with its LED backlight, so you can film in daylight even without a sun visor. What’s more, the screen is factory-calibrated to ensure that what you see on screen is exactly what you get.
Anamorphic ”de-squeeze”. Ninja V supports anamorphic de-squeeze, so you can easily view footage that has been squeezed to 2x, 1.5x, 1.33 or Panasonic’s 8:3 aspect ratio.
Additional accessories available for separate purchase include the AtomX SDI, AtomX SYNC and Connect 4K modules, as well as the SDI Raw licence, should you wish to expand the capabilities of the Ninja V+.
