FUJIFILM X-E3 - X-Pro2's little brother More compact, more competent and easier to use. That's how you can describe the new FUJIFLM X-E3 - our smallest system camera to date with a built-in viewfinder. Equipped with a 24 megapixel image sensor, 4K video and improved autofocus, it delivers a clear performance boost over its predecessor, the X-E2S. The camera also features power-saving Bluetooth connectivity for mobile devices and a redesigned touchscreen with additional functions. Classic design, ultra-modern interior The FUJIFILM X-E3 inherits the elegant look and feel inspired by the X-E2S rangefinder camera, with the same user-friendly handling and build quality. The top and bottom plates are magnesium alloy and the important controls are milled from aluminium. The camera body itself is now more compact and lighter, making it perfect for both subtle street photography and travel photography. Yet the camera still accommodates a high-resolution viewfinder (2,360,000 pixels) with a large, sharp and accurate image, making it easy to create elaborate compositions. Despite its classic looks, the X-E3 is a state-of-the-art camera in every respect. Now equipped with the same 24.3 megapixel X-Trans CMOS III sensor and powerful processor (X-Processor Pro) as the top-of-the-range X-T2 and X-Pro2, it is highly regarded for its high detail range and low noise. The camera is also capable of producing 4K video (3840×2160 pixels, 29.97p) at bit rates of up to 100 Mbps. Of course, the X-E3 also features Fujifilm's well-loved film simulation effects, including Velvia, Classic Chrome and black and white Acros, which can be used equally well in both video and still photography. For those of you who take video seriously, there are also connections for an external microphone and an HDMI output that can send a fully uncompressed video signal. Handling at the top The smaller outer shell of the FUJIFILM X-E3 has not affected the camera's handling. On the contrary, it's even better! The camera is equipped with easy-to-access and -use shutter speed and exposure compensation dials with a simple click. The latter has been given a special C mode, which allows you to increase/decrease exposure in five steps. A new control allows quick access to the full automatic mode (SR Auto - automatic target recognition); for easy and reliable working. Or when you want to lend your camera to someone else. Further improvements are brought by the touch screen, which can now control more functions than before. For example, you can use the touch function to move the focus point while looking through the viewfinder, or have the camera both focus and take a picture by touching the screen. What's more, you can quickly and easily change camera settings such as ISO, film simulation, white balance and self-timer. You can tap the picture display with your fingers to zoom in or double-click to zoom out and centre the image at the active focus point. If you want to share your images, the FUJIFILM X-E3 now also offers power-saving Bluetooth technology, meaning the camera can be connected to a mobile phone or tablet at all times. The image transfer itself is done via Wi-Fi through the FUJIFILM Camera Remote app, for both iOS and Android operating systems. Faster and more secure A camera with the appearance of a rangefinder camera may not be exactly what first comes to mind when you want to capture fast-moving subjects. But the FUJIFILM X-E3 is capable of handling such situations. Continuous shooting speeds have been increased to 8 fps (previously 7 fps) with the mechanical shutter, or 14 fps with the electronic shutter. The latter, moreover, gives shutter speeds down to an ultra-fast 1/32,000 of a second and captures even the fastest movements. The autofocus offers 91 focus points, of which 49 are phase-sensitive. When higher precision is required, the number of points can be increased up to 325 via the menu setting. AF point selection can be controlled using a joystick similar to that first introduced on the X-Pro2 - an adjustment that has become much appreciated by users. What's more, the autofocus has been further accelerated compared to its predecessor, and is both more sensitive and better at tracking moving subjects. Five specially adapted focus modes also make it easier to photograph action-packed events.
