Nikon Nikkor AF-P 70–300mm f/4.5–5.6E ED VR – a versatile all-rounder
The Nikon Nikkor AF-P 70–300mm f/4.5–5.6E ED VR is genuine Soikkeli, a jack-of-all-trades. If you take a single lens into the woods, this one will almost certainly do the job. Of course brighter there are options, as well as longer, But this is a nice compromise for everything without the weight being excessive. The AF-P Nikkor 70–300mm f/4.5–5.6E ED VR offers focusing performance and zoom power. It covers the telephoto end and is well-suited to portrait photography. One extra-low dispersion element forms part of the optical design, helping to control chromatic aberrations. The image is crisp and the colours are true to life. This is further aided by the Super Integrated coating, which keeps reflections and ghosting at bay. A notable feature of this lens is the AF-P marking, which indicates that it is fitted with a pulse-step motor, ensuring that focusing is quiet, fast and precise. Subjects are brought into focus extremely quickly and quietly. Focusing during video recording is practically silent. When shooting video, the motor enables smooth focusing transitions from one subject to another. The faint but audible sounds caused by the lens focusing no longer spoil the recorded footage.
You can take photos handheld without worrying about camera shake. You can reliably track fast-moving subjects with the SPORT VR function – even when they’re moving unpredictably. Compared to the previous version, the image stabilisation is faster, quieter and more effective. The vibration reduction technology now allows you to shoot at shutter speeds up to 4.5 stops slower than without vibration reduction¹. The function is activated immediately when the shutter release button is pressed halfway. This lens also features SPORT VR mode, familiar from Nikon’s professional-grade lenses. SPORT VR mode delivers an even steadier viewfinder image when shooting fast-moving subjects or during panning shots.
The A/M and M/A focus mode switches, familiar from Nikon’s professional-grade lenses, allow you to switch from autofocus to manual focus simply by turning the focus ring. The M/A mode, favoured by sports photographers, allows you to switch with virtually no delay. The A/M focus mode is less sensitive, which prevents accidental switching to manual mode. The focus and zoom rings feature a ribbed, non-slip surface.

A top-class lens! I mainly use it for landscape photography and on hikes, where I think it’s much better suited in terms of size and weight than 70–200mm lenses. Fast and really quiet autofocus.
The AF-P 70-300E is a top-class lens for the price. I bought this to use with the Z 6, which it suits perfectly in terms of size and weight. It scores highly for its fast and quiet autofocus, as well as its excellent image quality.
A brilliant lens! It produces much better results than its predecessor (the AF-S), especially when shooting at focal lengths over 200mm. The autofocus also seems much faster.
I bought it in early summer 2020 and have mainly been photographing aeroplanes taking off and landing, as well as a bit of architecture.The focus is spot on and locks onto the subject exactly where it should, even when the subject is travelling at speeds of up to 270 km/h. At first, I wondered if there was a fault with the camera’s sensor, as certain parts of the aeroplane looked as though they were suffering from image noise even at a low ISO setting. The reason, however, is that the detail in this FX version is top-class; it actually revealed ingrained dirt and paintwork that looked worn on the aircraft’s structures. Similarly, the eaves of the buildings and the grain of the wood in the window frames are clearly visible. It retains its resolution all the way up to 300mm at the widest aperture of f/5.6, which is not a given with zoom lenses. I shoot with a DX-format body; I’d recommend opting for this cheaper model rather than the AF-P DX version, of which I’ve had experience with two different units. With those, focus is spot on if you’re lucky; the FX version locks on more reliably, and there’s virtually no PF (Purple Fringing) compared to the DX version. The lens hood supplied with the FX version has been thoroughly thought through right from the design stage. I haven’t found any downsides. You have to pay more for a quality lens than for a kit lens, so the price difference between the DX and FX versions is justified. And at least you’ll have the lens ready if you decide to upgrade to an FX-format body.
