Samyang AF 24-70mm F/2.8 Sony FE - Really affordable basic zoom for Sony FE

Samyang has finally got their first zoom lens off the drawing board, the Samyang AF 24-70mm F/2.8 Sony FE. I can spoil it right off the bat by saying that this is by no means a bad device. It's a basic zoom lens. The lens is designed for ”full frame” sensor-less mirrorless cameras but it also works nicely on aps-C cameras where it produces a 36-86mm cinema equivalent focal length. It is quite handy for architectural photography or travel, for example.

The lens makes a nice bokeh despite the typical f/2.8 maximum aperture of zoom lenses. However, the aperture remains the same throughout the zoom range. Optical aberrations are kept well under control because the optical formula of the lens uses aspherical glass elements, one HB element and three HR elements and three extra-low dispersion elements. The UMC coating helps to control reflections. Fast and accurate autofocusing is achieved by a linear sonic motor (LSM). Dust and splash resistant construction is a surprising addition for a device in this price range and you can easily go into almost any shooting environment.

The best feature of the lens is that it's a so-called ”parfocal” lens, which means it keeps focus even when you zoom in or out. This feature is usually only present in high end cinema lenses. The focus is fast but also handy even if the focus changes, this is especially great for video.
