Guaranteed SmallRig quality. This was a great addition to the SmallRig HawkLock cage I bought for the FX30, which has an Arca-Swiss base, so it fits right in without a separate base plate. The price is quite high, but I think it's one of the only options that allows you to attach the base of the cage without a separate locking plate so that the camera is immediately pointed in the right direction.
This Smallrig V-mount is a welcome breath of fresh air from the future. What's the point of buying heavy bracket plates with D-brackets and other power supply harnesses when you can buy a lightweight and convenient ”slim-fit” plate and customize your own power solution? Content manufacturers have already largely moved to V-mount batteries, which themselves have multiple usb-c and d-tap outputs, eliminating the need for a separate plate that draws power.
This V-mount 4505 is designed for just such a photographer of the future. Plug in a Smallrig VB99 battery, attach a couple of usb cords and enjoy the convenience. Sure, you can buy add-ons to plug in a backup power supply (or an old-school power board), but to be honest, this thing is at its best with the new generation of batteries.
Any slightly more serious photographer will have a camera frame with an arca-swiss plate at the bottom, so attaching this bracket is as easy as making hay (although making hay is actually harder than tradition says). There's no need to worry that reversible cameras will no longer be able to see the screen under the plate, as Smallrig's engineers have made it easy to turn the plate. You can flip it down to the bottom position if you need to, allowing the swivel screen to rotate. That was the biggest adjustment for me, but after a couple of shoots it comes naturally. However, you should remember to get power cords long enough so that switching the battery to the down position doesn't require unplugging the cords from the screens etc. as you do get tired of that sort of thing.
Another place to think about is for top handle users, because if you want to use this v-mount in its most compact position, right up against the frame, depending on the battery you may find that the power cords get in the way of the top handle. This happens with the VB99 battery mentioned above, for example. However, Smallrig have thought of this, and the battery can be locked at e.g. a 45 degree angle, allowing space, and the mount will still stay firmly in place. So you're not limited to just the upright and down position.
This board is easy to use, well-carved and intelligently designed. I couldn't ask for more from a bracket plate. However, this is not optimal for someone working with old-school batteries. For best results, use this with the new generation of V-mount batteries. So take a leap into the future!
