With a 24.2 megapixel full 35mm screen Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor and BIONZ X processor, the a9 is capable of shooting at 20 frames per second, recording UHD 4K video internally, and using an extended ISO scale up to ISO 204800. The 693-point autofocus system, finely matched to the speed of the processor, which covers the 93% image area, is accurate and fast for subject tracking in a wide range of lighting conditions. And to top it all off, the 5-axis SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilizer minimises the difficulties of shooting handheld.

The viewfinder's visibility has been implemented without compromise: the quad-VGA OLED Tru-Finder with 3.686 million dots and 120 frames per second refresh rate is bright, clear and fluid. BIONZ X processor “With a ”stacked" CMOS sensor, the fast BIONZ X processor ensures fast operation that's easily enough for fast-paced shooting. Thanks to the electronic shutter, the viewfinder doesn't go dark at all when shooting. 693-point phase detection AF The 93%'s image area-covering, phase-detecting autofocus system features 693 focus points and 25 contrast detection areas for fast and accurate focusing in a wide range of lighting conditions, with sensitivity up to -3ev. The density of focus points in this hybrid focus system enables high quality focus tracking. The use of alternate focus points also allows the use of A-bayonet lenses with LA-EA3 or LA-EA1 bayonet adapters using continuous focus tracking. The clever focusing system has also improved all the autofocus settings of previous models, including Lock-on AF, Expand Flexible Spot, and Eye AF.
