Sony ECM-B10 – Shotgun microphone with handy features and a compact size

Sony's ECM-B10 is a small, directional shotgun microphone that works wirelessly in most Sony cameras. Due to its size and features, the microphone is well suited for mobile content creators, such as vloggers.

Microphone beamforming technology utilises digital signal processing to create strong directivity. The microphone also converts analogue audio to digital and processes the sound using Sony's algorithms, which enables the microphone to feature effective noise cancellation and three polar patterns.

It is possible to change the polar pattern using a switch between three different options: highly directional, unidirectional and omnidirectional. The highly directional pattern focuses precisely only on the sound coming from directly in front of the microphone, dampening background noise from elsewhere. The unidirectional pattern captures sound from a wider area, but still only from in front of the microphone. The omnidirectional pattern, as the name suggests, records ambient sounds coming from all directions.

Unlike microphones from other manufacturers, the ECM-B10 can be used wirelessly with Sony cameras equipped with an MI accessory shoe. So, you simply attach the microphone to the hot shoe of such a camera, and you are ready to start recording. In this way, any potential interference or noise caused by cables and connections is also reliably eliminated. In addition, the microphone draws its power via the MI accessory connector, so there is no need to worry about a separate battery or cells.

On the rear panel of the microphone are control switches for volume, polar pattern and other functions. Thanks to the position of the switches, you can see at a glance that all settings are correct. Like most Sony bodies and lenses, the microphone repels moisture and dust. You can therefore film outdoors without a care.

The ECM-B10 comes with a furry windscreen to help reduce wind noise.
