The Otus 55mm F/1.4 is the first professional-grade lens from Zeiss in its range that makes no compromises on quality. ‘Otus’ is the Latin name for a genus of birds belonging to the owl family, known for their particularly keen night vision – what could be a more fitting name!

Zeiss’s aim was to create the best lens on the market designed for digital system cameras. The only way to achieve this was to use the complex Distagon design, which is normally only used in wide-angle lenses.

Thanks to the virtually non-existent longitudinal chromatic aberration, there is virtually no colour fringing in the images. Thanks to its superb performance at full aperture, the lens is also an excellent choice for close-ups and portraits. When used with a modern high-resolution sensor for architectural and landscape photography, even the finest details can be captured.

The lens features a completely new optical and mechanical design, developed specifically to meet the requirements of the latest high-resolution sensors. The Otus 55mm F/1.4 lens features a floating construction comprising 12 elements in 10 groups, including a double-sided aspherical element, as well as six specially manufactured lenses that reduce reflections and distortions. These advanced features produce unique, flawless photographs. The specially designed, extremely smooth focus ring, with a large rotation angle, enables truly precise manual focusing.
