Description

Canon EOS R8 - an affordable transition to the world of full-frame

The Canon EOS R8 is at the lightest and most compact end of Canon's R series, but still packs a full-cell sensor. In effect, the R8 is the little brother of the R6 mark II with slightly trimmed down features. The R8 and R6 II share the same 24-megapixel sensor and Digic X image processor. In terms of image quality, autofocus and video features, the cameras are similar. The main differences between the R6 II and the R8 are the lack of an in-camera image stabilizer, only one card slot and a smaller battery capacity. If a full-size sensor isn't a necessity, you should check out the almost identically priced body-cell R7 camera, which in some cases includes more features than the R8.

A full-size cell has the advantage of a wider dynamic range, less noise and a narrower depth of field. These factors are important in portrait photography, for example. When shooting in low light conditions, a full frame also comes in handy, as the cell absorbs more light and therefore the images are less ”noisy”.

The R8 incorporates the new generation of autofocus familiar from the EOS R3, R5 and R6 cameras, which performs remarkably well in demanding focusing situations. The focus AI is based on deep learning and can recognise people, animals and vehicles. In humans in particular, the focus stays glued, no matter how fast the subject is moving.

The video side of the Canon R8 won't leave even the most demanding enthusiast cold. Video shooting uses the entire sensor to achieve a wide dynamic range and a very sharp image. At its best, the camera captures a super-reduced 4k image from 6K resolution, resulting in a very sharp reproduction of the image. At 4K resolution, shooting is possible at up to 60 frames per second, so fast movements are reproduced smoothly. If you want to slow down fast motion more dramatically, the camera can shoot at FullHD resolution at up to 180 fps slow motion. If the dream is to shoot your own movie, the R7 offers a C-Log 3 colour profile that allows for comprehensive colour definition in post-production. Professional video functionality doesn't stop there, as the R8 also includes a false colour detector, focus highlight, zebra and digital zoom, among other features.
