The battery is the heart of the camera – without it, you can’t take any photos. The camera usually comes with one standard battery and a charger, but for the more demanding photographer, this combination is rarely enough.

Why buy spare batteries?

Batteries run out, and their capacity diminishes over time. On longer photography trips – and often on shorter ones too – having a few spare batteries in your pocket can save you from many unpleasant surprises. What about the charger?

It’s worth giving the charger some more thought rather than just relying on the basic model that came with the device. A good charger charges quickly, can charge several batteries at once, and can be powered via USB – meaning you can get power from a travel charger, a computer or a car socket. Some models charge the battery directly in the camera, so you don’t need to remove the battery at all. The more compact premium models also feature a small display showing the battery’s condition and charging status in real time.
