Nikon’s flagship crop-sensor DSLR leaves no one unimpressed. Superb image quality, focusing speed, ergonomics and build quality. One of the best camera bodies ever for wildlife and sports photographers. The autofocus module, borrowed from the D5, keeps the subject locked on even in difficult conditions, and the camera also features automatic lens calibration.

The camera is based on Nikon’s flagship D5 model and is designed to work seamlessly with it. The cameras share many features, including:

• Common AF focus module (Multi-CAM 20K)
• shared processor (Expeed 5)
• touchscreen (D500 also allows you to rotate the screen)
• Split key layout
• You can also use the EN-EL18a battery with the Nikon MB-D17 battery holder
• Operating logic made to make D5 / D500 body swapping easy 

The biggest differences to Nikon's former flagship, the Nikon D7200 vs. D500:

• 2x higher native sensitivity, and more than 10x higher extended sensitivity
• Electronic image stabilisation in video
• New RGB sensor, 2.1k vs 180k (much better whitebalance measurement)
• Faster continuous shooting (6 fps vs 10 fps)
• Significantly larger buffer ( 18 vs 200 RAW images)
• Illuminated buttons, like on the D5
• New focusing system, Multi-CAM 20K. More focus points (51 vs 153, including 15 vs 99 cross points)
• 100% viewfinder (D7200 0.94x)
• New sharper LCD that also works as a touchscreen (1229k vs 2359k)
• New built-in image sharing system SnapBridge
• Compatible with MB-17 battery head, so you can also use D5 EN-EL18a batteries (over 2500 shots on a single charge)
