Sony ECM-M1 microphone
The Sony ECM-M1 is more compact than its predecessors and features four diamond-patterned capsules. It is an on-camera digital shotgun microphone designed for creators using Sony cameras equipped with the Multi Interface Shoe who need to switch between interview and social mode. Built-in digital signal processing and advanced beamforming make recordings clear, with interchangeable noise and low-angle filters. With a super-wide pickup pattern, both front and rear sensors have eight selectable modes for extremely flexible recording.
Super-directional and ultra-directional: refined foreground. Ideal for vlogs or interviews where the subject in front of the camera is the main focus. The super-directional pattern collects sound from a focused area in front of the microphone and effectively attenuates sound from off-axis and behind the camera. Choose between front and rear super-directional. Ultra-directional further compresses this area for a more limited pickup area.
Unidirectional: Wide frontal angle. Perfect for multi-person conversations, the unidirectional pattern captures sound from a wide field in front of the microphone and minimizes crossover from behind.
Sound from any direction. The multi-directional pattern picks up sound evenly from all directions, which is useful for recording ambient sounds or the voice of the camera operator.
Recording front and back. Record from both the front and back of the camera, which is a particularly useful mode for interviews where you want to record the interviewer's voice or reactions. You can also extract the front and rear audio from two separate channels for more intuitive adjustment during post-production. This same technology allows you to record stereo surround sound automatically.
Pickup pattern, gain and audio level controls are within easy reach on the rear and side panels and are visible at a glance for quick adjustment during shooting. The ECM-M1's noise reduction filter and low-cut filter are highly effective at reducing excess ambient noise and reducing low-frequency noise using digital signal processing algorithms, maximising sound quality during the recording phase and reducing the need for complex operations in post-production.
The microphone's 7 cm overall length allows it to be used with wide-angle lenses, viewfinders and gimbals where space is at a premium.
No cables are needed to connect the microphone to several Sony cameras with an MI shoe. The absence of connection cables means that noise cannot be mechanically transferred to the microphone via cables and connectors. The ECM-M1 features an advanced shock and vibration absorbing design that effectively minimises low frequency or processing noise that can degrade sound quality.
The ECM-M1 has a furry windscreen that is easily removable. It effectively reduces wind noise and captures crisp sound for outdoor shooting. Its dust and moisture repellent design makes it even more ideal for challenging weather conditions.
