Continuous f/2 maximum aperture

The continuous f/2 maximum aperture is a full stop faster than the f/2.8 lens, which helps this zoom to shine in low light and offers greater control over depth of field and subject-background separation. XA, Super ED, Aspherical and ED elements produce sharp, smooth images suitable for architectural and landscape photography, portraits and weddings.

Nano AR coating II

Nano AR Coating II reduces reflections and ensures rich contrast and bright colours in a variety of lighting conditions. Image quality remains high throughout the focusing distance, with sharpness remaining the same from an infinite minimum distance of 1.2 feet (about 36 cm). A circular 11-blade dimming aperture produces a smooth, rounded bokeh effect.

Designed for hybrid photographers

The 28-70mm f/2 GM is a lens that is equally suited to photographic and cinematographic use. Its design incorporates a number of useful features that benefit hybrid use:

• Four XD (extreme dynamic) linear motors produce a fast and responsive autofocus that is as quiet as it is smooth. The focus system is compatible with continuous shooting at up to 120 frames per second or high-speed video at up to 240 frames per second.
• The built-in focusing mechanism promotes faster focusing and keeps the lens length the same during use.
• Focus breathing is significantly reduced optically and the lens supports a breathing compensation function in selected cameras, effectively eliminating angle of view changes as the zoom is changed.
• The manual gap adjustment ring can be declicked for a smooth and silent changeover. The zoom smoothness can also be adjusted to smooth or tight for more precise handling.
• The lens weighs less than a kilogram, but most of this weight is placed on the bayonet side of the lens, to promote a balanced design and ensure comfortable hand-holding.

Portable and smart design

Despite its large and bright f/2 aperture and versatile focal length range, this 28-70mm f/2 lens is still a portable and relatively lightweight lens for handheld shooting and everyday use.

At around 14cm long and weighing less than a kilo, this lens is 28% larger and 24% heavier than the 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II, while being twice as powerful. A manual aperture control ring provides comfortable exposure control and the ring can be declicked for smooth and silent aperture changes or locked in the ’A’ position for camera-based aperture changes. Two programmable focus hold buttons and a focus mode switch for intuitive focus control. Zoom smoothness switch allows smooth and tight zoom ring torque switching. Hybrid construction uses both metal and plastic components to maximise durability and lightweight design. Dust and moisture-proof construction includes rubber seals at each seam and a rubber ring that seals the lens mount, ensuring use in challenging weather conditions.

The front lens element has a fluorine coating that repels water, oil and other contaminants, making it easier to clean the lens. The supplied lens hood is equipped with a locking button and a filter window to facilitate adjustment of rotating filters (e.g. polarizing and variable ND filters).
