The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM is a professional tool designed for taking candid portraits with full-frame Sony FE cameras.The 85mm is the ideal focal length for people photography, it doesn't reduce the face too much, nor does it magnify any part of the face as short lenses can do. The appropriate focal length, combined with the f/1.4 aperture and 11-pole dimmer, produces an extremely beautiful and creamy background blur or ”bokeh”. It allows you to bring out your subjects beautifully, even in less pleasant environments and situations.

The optical design consists of three extra-low dispersion elements and one extreme aspherical element, creating a truly sharp and contrasty image without chromatic aberration. The last sentence contains a lot of silly English words that don't translate very well, but picture quality is pure gold. This particular lens was also in my camera bag when I was still shooting weddings, and in practice when "safe" potshots were taken there was always a Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM / G-Master. This was then paired with Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM with, because at that time not yet a brilliant Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 had come out. The lens is accurate enough to shoot fine from full aperture and works brilliantly in backlighting too. The Nano AR coating helps reduce reflections, improve colour and increase contrast even in harsh backlighting.

The autofocus on 85mm f/1.4 lenses will never be super fast, but the SSM (Super Sonic Motor) is relatively fast and quiet and will certainly be sufficient for most shooting applications. You can override the focus directly from the focus ring, as well as turn off autofocus with the AF/MF button. The aperture is changed directly from the lens aperture ring.

The G-master series is known for its excellent optical performance and also for its structural quality. The lens is sturdy, lightweight and comfortable to use. The lens is dust and moisture protected, and can withstand even the harshest shooting conditions just fine.
