The lens consists of eleven lens elements in nine groups, including three aspherical lenses and three ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) lenses. The use of three aspherical lenses enables both high imaging performance and a beautiful bokeh effect, a common advantage of all f1.8 lenses. The ED lenses effectively suppress chromatic aberration. It is suitable for a wide range of situations, including landscapes as well as portraiture. The lens can also be used for close-up photography thanks to a minimum distance of 0.24 metres.

The LUMIX S 35mm F1.8 is capable of smooth, silent movement thanks to an autofocus system with a sensor control speed of up to 240 frames per second. In non-linear mode, focus shifts by a variable amount according to the rotational speed of the focus ring, while in linear mode focus shifts by a fixed amount according to the rotational speed of the focus ring. The sensitivity (the amount of focus shift per rotation quantum) can be varied from 90 to 360 degrees every 30 degrees to allow the desired focusing function. The lens also performs excellently in video photography with a mechanism that suppresses focus breathing, which was the biggest problem with all interchangeable lenses designed for still photography. Combined with micro-step aperture control, it produces a smooth exposure change and allows professional-quality video to be recorded. At around 295g, the compact size and light weight make the LUMIX S 35mm f1.8 highly travel-friendly. The rugged dust and splash-proof construction withstands use in demanding conditions up to 10 degrees below zero. The filter has a diameter of 67 mm and a nine-leaf circular aperture plate.
