Sony FX6 - Movie camera in a compact size

The Sony FX6 is easily the most sensible camera if your intention is to make really high quality video at a relatively reasonable price. About half the physical size of its big brother, the FX9, but better in places, it really tickles the indie filmmaker's soul. Sony's new FX6 is a ”full cell” camera designed to deliver a versatile, cinema-style image in a truly compact size.

With fifteen aperture dynamics, Sony's S-Cinetone gamma and up to 10-bit 4:2:2 XAVC-I recording, the FX6 goes nicely with the FX9 and Venice when you want to smoothly document things, use gimbal, and drone photography with a bigger camera. The FX6 camera combines the capabilities of a 4K ”full cell” Exmor R sensor with the Bionz XR processor and lets you indulge in native ISO 800 and ISO 12800 sensitivities and shoot in really low light conditions.

Weighing less than 900 grams, the FX6 is half the weight of the FX9 and measures a comfortable 153 x 116 x 114 mm, which is about the size of the Sony FS5 with a quartz sensor camera. While the Sony FX6 sits well in a pro-cine workflow, it offers good stuff for single-operator applications. Among other things, fast and accurate phase-detection autofocus, with face detection and real-time eye tracking. Both manual and automatic ND filters do a great job of correcting exposure without you having to touch anything. The 3.5″ touchscreen saves time and adjustment.

As part of Sony's Cinema range, the FX6 shares key features with the industry-leading Venice and FX9.
