Sony A7 III, A7 IV and A7 V – versatile all-round cameras

The basic A7 is the series” ”all-rounder’, equally suited to portrait photography, events, travel and video. The original A7 and A7 II are no longer available new, but they can be found at affordable prices second-hand.

Sony A7 III

A7 III It still offers excellent value for money, especially second-hand. It features a 24-megapixel full-frame sensor, 10 frames per second, a five-axis image stabiliser, 4K video and long battery life thanks to the NP-FZ100 battery. It’s well suited to event, portrait and general photography, provided you don’t need the very latest video features.

Sony A7 IV

A7 IV It features a higher-resolution 33-megapixel sensor, a more intelligent autofocus system that recognises not only people but also animals and birds, as well as significantly improved video capabilities and the cinematic S-Cinetone colour profile. For many, it remains the most sensible choice for both stills and video.

Sony A7 V

A7 V was released in December 2025. It still has a 33-megapixel sensor, but the sensor is partially stacked, so it reads the image much faster. With its electronic shutter, the camera can shoot up to 30 frames per second without the viewfinder going dark, and pre-capture technology records images even before the shutter is released. AI autofocus recognises subjects more accurately than before, and video is recorded as 7K oversampled 4K 60p footage. The A7 V is particularly well-suited to sports, events and nature photography, where speed is of the essence.

We compared two popular models in more detail in the article Sony A7R V vs. Sony A7 IV.

Sony A7S III – S for Sensitivity

A7S IIIIt only has 12 megapixels, but that means each pixel is large and captures a lot of light. The image remains clean even at very high ISO settings, making the camera excellent for low-light photography and video. If you mainly shoot video, documentaries or music videos, or take a lot of photos in the evening, the A7S III is a good choice.

If you’re just filming video, have a look at Sony’s FX series film cameras designed exclusively for video recording.

Sony A7R V and A7R VI – R as in Resolution

The R-series boasts a huge number of megapixels, so the images are exceptionally detailed and can be cropped or printed large without losing any resolution. The range is ideal for landscape photographers, studio work, and advertising and product photography.

Sony A7R V

A7R VIt features a 61-megapixel sensor and a dedicated AI processor for autofocus. It recognises people, animals, birds, insects and vehicles, and tracks them accurately. It also features a powerful image stabiliser, a precise viewfinder, a multi-angle screen and 8K video. Its predecessor, the A7R IV, has the same resolution but an older autofocus system, and is a good choice on the second-hand market.

Sony A7R VI

A7R VI It was released in May 2026. The resolution has increased to 66.8 megapixels, and the sensor is now stacked, making it significantly faster than its predecessor. The camera records video at 8K 30p and 4K 120p. It is aimed at professionals who require both extreme resolution and speed.

Sony A7C, A7C II and A7CR – C as in Compact

The C-series offers full-frame image quality in a significantly smaller and lighter body. The viewfinder is located in the top-left corner of the body, and the screen tilts to the side, making these cameras popular amongst vloggers and travel photographers.

  • A7C: The first model in the series – essentially the A7 III’s 24-megapixel technology in a compact body. A good, affordable option when bought second-hand.
  • A7C II: The A7 IV’s 33-megapixel sensor, a newer processor and AI autofocus, all in a body of the same size. The best compromise between size and features.
  • A7CR: The A7R V’s 61-megapixel sensor in a compact body. The viewfinder and continuous shooting speed are more modest than on the A7R V, but the high resolution fits easily into your bag.

Lenses and adapters for Sony A7 cameras

All A7 cameras use Sony’s E-bayonet. Full-frame lenses are marked FE- and are compatible with all A7 models. The E-mount boasts the widest range of lenses on the market, and in addition to Sony’s own lenses, there is a wide selection available from manufacturers such as Sigma and Tamron. Read our guide to find out how to choose the right focal length choosing a lens.

With an adapter You can also use Canon EF or Nikon F lenses. However, the autofocus isn’t always as fast as with the original lenses, and on older A7 bodies it can be noticeably slower. Please ask us or try them out in-store before making a purchase.

Second-hand Sony A7

A7 cameras hold their value well, and on the second-hand market you can get, for example, an A7 III, A7R IV or A7C for significantly less than the price of a new one. We inspect every camera and provide the shutter count, and all second-hand cameras come with a warranty of at least 90 days. See second-hand Sony cameras. You can also replace your old camera towards a newer A7, in which case the trade-in allowance is deducted directly from the price.

Frequently asked questions

What do S, R and C stand for on Sony A7 cameras?

S stands for sensitivity (Sensitivity), meaning a model specialising in low-light photography and video; R stands for resolution (Resolution), meaning a high number of megapixels; and C stands for compact (Compact), meaning a small body. The A7 on its own is a versatile all-rounder.

Which Sony A7 should I buy?

For most people, the A7 IV or A7 V. They’re suitable for both stills and video. The most affordable way to get a full-frame camera is with a second-hand A7 III, and for travelling, the compact A7C II is the best choice.

What is the difference between the Sony A7 IV and the A7 V?

Both have 33 megapixels, but the A7 V’s partially stacked sensor is significantly faster. The A7 V shoots at up to 30 frames per second using an electronic shutter, features pre-capture and improved AI autofocus, and records video in 7K oversampled 4K 60p.

Are APS-C lenses compatible with Sony A7 cameras?

They are compatible because they use the same bayonet mount. In this case, the camera crops the image to APS-C format, so there are fewer megapixels. Full-frame FE lenses make use of the entire sensor.

Is it still worth buying the Sony A7 III?

It’s worth it if you’re looking for an affordable full-frame camera and mainly take stills. Second-hand, the A7 III offers one of the best value-for-money options. Newer models are better in terms of autofocus and video.
